W: 19:30~21:20
S: 16:30~18:20 |
Each class period is 110 minutes long and includes:
- Quiz / Review: The aim is to check that students understand
and remember what was taught in the previous lesson and that they
have done their homework. This is also an opportunity for teachers
to correct pronunciation and intonation and check the progress
of each student. The new material to be taught should follow on
naturally from the review.
- Presentation of new material: using intensive sound exposure,
flashcards and other teaching aids. Students are expected to ask
and answer questions and are encouraged to participate actively
in each lesson.
- Dictation / recitation: As well as the assigned homework, students
are required to do a dictation or recitation based on the main
points of the lesson. This ensures that they go home with a correct
piece of written or spoken English from which to review.
- Homework: Homework is assigned and the teacher checks and signs
the students’ communication books at the end of each lesson.
Students need to bring a tape recorder or similar device to every
lesson in order to record the key language taught in that lesson.
This provides listening material for students to review at home.
For some homework assignments, students will be asked to record
themselves at home and bring the tape to the next class. |
| Assessment |
- Each semester, there is a mid-term and a final exam. Students
who attain 70% or above can proceed to the next level.
- After each assessment, the top three students in each class
will be named on their school’s Honor Roll and the Hua website.
|
| Class size |
In order to maintain a good class atmosphere and give students
a healthy sense of competition, each class has between 16 – 24 students.
If class size falls below 10, students will be assigned to other
classes according to ability. |

Suggestions
| Pre-class Preparation |
Preparation is the key to effective learning in the
classroom. Parents are strongly urged to help their children develop
the habit of preparing for each class. |
| Parental Observations |
At Hua, we welcome parents to sit in on their children’s classes.
We hope that parents can gain a deep understanding of the lesson
content and the progress of each student. We hope that you will
be able to help your child review at home and thereby work together
with the teacher to make the learning process more effective.
However, with respect to the limited space in the classroom, parents
are asked to respect the school’s guidelines regarding observations,
so that the students will not be distracted from learning.
|
| Review |
In order that students have more opportunities to practice English
and study more effectively, parents are encouraged to help their
children review taught material at home:
- Reviewing the key points from each lesson by listening to the
taped recording will give your child more sound exposure.
- Reading the Communication Book after each lesson will keep
you up to date regarding what your child has learnt in class.
- Check your child’s written and oral homework to make sure it
has been completed correctly.
- Encouraging your child to make regular use of additional learning
resources, such as Audio CDs and Multimedia CD-Roms will improve
his/her listening skills.
- The techniques you see used in the classroom can be used to
help your child to review at home.
- Communicating regularly with teachers will help you gain a better
understanding of how to help your child.
|
| Homework |
Homework is assigned by the teacher after each class to encourage
students to study independently at home. Please make sure your child
completes his/her homework correctly. |
| Daily Use |
Language is a communication tool, and needs to be practiced every
day before it becomes second nature. Therefore, we encourage parents
to give students as many opportunities to read or speak English as
possible. We have developed a vast range of resources for use outside
the classroom and hope that you and your child will enjoy using them. |

Guidelines for Parental Observations
| A Unique Approach |
Parental observations are a unique part of Hua’s
English program. We feel that inviting parents to observe the lessons
has many positive effects on students’ learning experience. Successful
learning is not only a matter for teachers and students, but requires
the active cooperation of teachers, parents, and students. However,
in order to ensure that teaching is not disrupted, observations
are offered for all regular classes, but limited to the first four
sessions at KEEP level. |
| Aims |
Having a parent in the classroom can be encouraging for students,
as well as give parents a better understanding of what students
are learning and how they are progressing. On returning home, parents
have the first-hand knowledge that enables them to consolidate the
learning process that began in the classroom. |
| Classes |
- All regular elementary classes
- First 4 KEEP classes
|
| Notes |
- Only one parent can accompany each student into the classroom.
- For safety reasons, the number of parents admitted will be
dependant on the size of the classroom. (For most classrooms this
means 10 parents.)
- Priority will be given to parents of younger students, or those
who require more support.
- Parents are requested to only sit in seats reserved for observers
and leave the central seating area free for the students themselves.
- So as not to disturb the class, please do not read the newspaper
or talk during the lesson. If you have any questions, please speak
to the teacher after class.
- Please switch off your cell phones in the classroom.
- Please do not photograph or film the class.
- Please do not walk in and out during the class or bring other
children into the classroom.
