What Prevents You From Becoming Fluent?
by Teacher Eddy Hsu
Most people whose mother tongue is not English have learned English in the “non-natural way.” That is, they have learned English in a way that is opposite to the way of natural language acquisition.
The natural way of acquiring a language is to learn to speak it first and then to write it. However, most people that learn English have learnt to write English, rather than to speak it. So, in a way, they are manipulated by written English. The result is that whenever they try to speak English, they end up producing written English orally. This is not congruous to spoken English. This manipulation by written English holds back the learner from speaking English spontaneously.
So, what can be done to correct this? It is important to have a teacher who understands this problem at hand. You see, this problem cannot be fixed if it eludes the teacher. The teacher must be aware of this problem and also have a teaching method that deals with it. The teacher’s teaching methodology cannot be traditional, as the traditional methods are what’s failing the learners.
